New video explores culture and care
A new video released in partnership with Burrun Dalai explores how an Aboriginal agency supports cultural care planning and cultural connections for Aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care.

Connection to culture, country and kinship is critical for all Aboriginal children.
In the Culture and Care video, Vanessa from the Office of the Children’s Guardian talks with Dana and Tintinara from Burrun Dalai about how they support children and young people in out-of-home care on their cultural journey. They explore how it has to be a deliberate process of engaging with community and inviting children and young people to learn about their culture.
“If Aboriginal children aren’t with Aboriginal carers, how do [they] know about [their] Aboriginality?” Dana says.
“We have to invite them into learning about who they are and where they belong, and what it is that makes them special about being an Aboriginal person.”
This video show why cultural support plans are important to a child’s overall wellbeing, and what cultural support looks like when it’s done wholistically and in engagement with community.
Culture and Care will be followed by a second video and a written resource for agencies to use to help them understand how to support the cultural safety of Aboriginal children and young people in care.
